What is the AODA?

As a newer piece of legislation the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) has a lot to it. The following information is here to help you make sense of what it involves and what it requires of you. What is the ODA?

The Ontarians with Disabilities Act (ODA), 2001 came into force on February 7, 2002. The act was meant to achieve a barrier-free Ontario for persons with disabilities giving them the right of full participation. It was to require the timely removal of existing barriers, within reasonable time lines and in accordance with reasonable cost parameters. This will eventually be replaced by the AODA but remains in force until it is repealed. Public sector organizations are legally required to prepare annual accessibility plans and make those plans available for the public.

What is the AODA?

The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), 2005 was passed on May 10, 2005. This Act is meant to create accessibility for all Ontarians with disabilities in public, private and not-for profit sectors with respect to goods, services, facilities, accommodation, employment, and buildings by January 1, 2025. It applies to both public and private sector organizations. The size of the private organization determines the number or requirements that need to be met.

What is the ABES?

The Accessible Built Environment Standard (ABES) was recently released for a public information period as the Final Proposed Accessible Built Environment Standard. It is unknown if the minister will adopt this standard in this form or if further changes will be made before it is adopted into law.
